Neighbors At Odds Over Dallas Dog Rescue
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Nell Steel is an animal lover.
"They're my life and I love them," she said.
Steel runs a rescue out of her home in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood of Dallas, taking in stray or unwanted dogs.
They're healthy and they have their vaccinations and they're spayed and neutered," she said.
Steel has 20 dogs on her property, and neighbors say that it too many.
"This isn't a dog shelter. It's a neighborhood," said Brent Thompson, who lives next door to Steel. "It was unbearable to smell and the barking and fleas."
Steel received a "grandfather" exemption to keep the dogs, even after the city changed the laws to limit the number of pets per residence. However, after complaints from neighbors and a city investigation, Steel must now remove all of the dogs from her property by Thursday.
Thompson says some neighbors have tried to work the Steel, asking her to reduces the number of dogs she takes in.
"I hate this has had to happen, but she could have stopped it from happening a long time ago," he said.
Steel says she would be happy to leave the neighborhood so she can run the rescue, but she doesn't have the time or the money to move. She will appeal the city's decision, but she's worried about what will happen to the dogs.
"I wouldn't want to see them put down for no reason. They're beautiful dogs," she said.
