Project Awards Scholarships To Working Parents

NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― One organization is handing out cash to working moms in North Texas who want to go back to school. And in some cases those scholarships are worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Heather Hererra has spent most of the last 13 years as a stay at home mom raising her girls in Mesquite. She worked in the family business, keeping the books, but always longed for something more. "I felt like a degree could take me places, I really didn't have a lot on my resume."

Hererra knew money for college would be tight, so she looked for scholarships. "At my age, it's a little hard to find scholarships that apply to me," she said. "I had mediocre grades in high school."

Then she found eLearners.com.  The organization runs project working mom, which finds scholarships for working moms who want to go back to school.

Content Director Helen Macdermott says colleges and universities provide the money. "In total we have now awarded close to four million dollars."

Applicants can pursue anything from an Associate's Degree to a Doctorate. The first step is writing an essay. "In the essay we ask applicants to discuss their personal and professional goals and how an online degree would help them reach those goals," Macdermott said.

Herrera sent in her application and a few months later got the good news. She received a $66,000 four-year, full ride, scholarship to Virginia College online. "It blows my mind, it blows my mind," she told CBS 11.

The online classes in business administration give Hererra flexibility to spend time with her family. "You can do it 6am before the kids get up or at 11 at night after everyone goes to bed."

And when she's done, Herrera says she's considering a career in accounting or business management. "Once I have a degree I can take it anywhere. No one can take it away from me."

Project working mom is also open to dads! And the organization is now accepting applications for 2010.
