FW Police Say Female Robber Targets Elderly Women
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
It starts as a trip to the grocery store. But for several North Texas women it ends in fear and violation.
They're followed home. Sometimes they are beaten, but they always are robbed.
The crook police are hunting for is a woman too. The robber doesn't use a gun, just physical force.
The latest victim had been shopping at a Kroger on Bridge Street. She's hoping other women will pay more attention to who's behind them after they hear her story.
"It was upsetting," said the victim, who did not wish to be identified. She's been alive for 92 years, but this grandmother says she's never experienced the fear she felt Saturday afternoon when a woman attacked her outside of her own home.
"I started screaming, and she told me to shut up," she said.
Police believe the female robber followed the victim home from the Kroger. As soon as the victim got out of her car, the robber grabbed her.
"She started dragging me into the house and she put me down on the floor and told me to stay on my back," she said.
The robber went through her pockets.
"She got the money out I had left from buying groceries. Took that, and then reached in the other pocket and got my credit card," she said.
Then the victim said the woman rummaged through her entire house.
She grabbed some money out of a vase and eventually took off.
"We're concerned about it. We're working hard to get the person identified," said Paul Henderson, a spokesperson for the Fort Worth Police Department.
Police say the female bandit has struck at least five times since October 15. Nearly all of her victims are women in their 90's.
Each time, she follows her target home from a grocery store. She forces the victim inside their home. In some cases, she slaps them around and tells them not to move or she'll kill them.
She takes off with cash, credit cards and jewelry. She even stole a 90-year-old woman's wedding ring.
"I hope she's caught and she's caught very soon. We're gonna do everything we can to put her behind bars," said Henderson.
Even if they do, the victim says she'll never be the same. "I think I was numb," she said.
Police want everyone to pay attention when they're driving home. They say look to look in rearview mirrors and if someone seems to be following behind, drive to a police station or call 911.
Investigators don't have much of a description of the suspect in this case.
