Seventh Elderly FW Person Robbed In As Many Weeks
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A 95-year-old North Texas woman is recovering after she was attacked by a purse snatcher in her own garage. Police believe the thief followed the woman home from a grocery store.
It's the seventh time in seven weeks that this type of crime has been reported in Fort Worth.
All Vera Fagan has left of her handbag is two black straps.
"I held onto it just as long as I could but... oh, he jerked. He jerked," she said.
The 95-year-old was robbed in her own garage in east Fort Worth.
"Got out of the car and he was there; grabbed the purse," she said.
It happened around 3:30 Saturday afternoon.
Fagan went to a CVS store on Meadowbrook Drive to get a prescription filled for her 98-year-old husband. Then she went to the Wal-Mart across the street to pick up some groceries.
"I remember a little white car following me home," she said.
But Fagan didn't think much about it until she pulled into her garage and a man ran in behind her.
"I started screaming as loud as I could," she said. Then she tried to fight off the robber.
"When he jerked I went to the floor and I couldn't get up," she said.
A couple of neighbors rushed over to help, but the robber got away with Fagan's handbag and her husband's medicine.
"It was his blood pressure medicine," she said.
Within the hour, Fagan found out someone had used her credit card.
"They'd bought $139 worth of groceries at Minyard's, just right up the street," she said.
She was left nursing a bruised and swollen arm injured in the attack.
"I thought of everything," she said. "How terrible this is to happen to anybody. Me, I'm just thankful he didn't have a gun."
Police say if you think someone is following you in your car, call 911 if you have a cell phone. Otherwise, drive directly to a police station.
