Fire At Ellis County Chemical Plant
AVALON (AP/CBS 11 News) ―
Residents living in the Ellis County town of Avalon evacuated their homes late Sunday evening after a fire at a nearby chemical plant.
Hazardous material crews spent the evening Sunday cleaning up after the fire. Authorities asked people living in a one miles radius around the plant to stay away from their homes until cleanup was complete. The fire was located inside a storage warehouse at the PSC chemical plant on Phillips Street in Avalon.
Ellis County Sheriff's deputies say the first call went out around 7:50 Sunday night. The fire was extinguished about 30 minutes later.
Fire officials in Avalon say even though the fire was out, there was concern over fumes from the smoldering fire. The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical malfunction. It is unknown what chemical burned in the fire.
Fire officials scaled back their original two mile evacuation area. Families in the outer perimiter returned to their homes Sunday evening.
Avalon is about 40 miles south of Dallas.
