Texans With Character: Save The Animals
Brothers Create Calendars, Cookbook To Help Save Engangered Animals
(CBS 11 / TXA 21)
Bretton and Brady Laboret have cooked up a big idea to raise money to save animals very dear to them.
Two years ago, a then-6-year-old Bretton Laboret started a mission to save endangered animals and their habitats.
"After kindergarten I started reading animal books and it made me sad that people were hunting them and taking away their habitat so I wanted to raise money to help save them," the now-8-year-old said.
As a first grader, Bretton published a calendar with hand-drawn and colored pictures of endangered animals.
He made $850 his first year.
This year his 7-year-old brother, Brady, helped and the two added a cookbook to raise more money.
Proceeds are donated to the National Wildlife Federation
"Then they save one of the animals that is in our cookbook or calendar," Brady explains proudly.
The cookbook, "Save the Animals, Eat Desserts," has desserts such as Cheetah's Cheesecake, Turtle Treats, and the boys' favorite the Bird Droppings.
"It's like a brownie and a cake mixed together," they are quick to add.
Both of the boys want to be veterinarians when they grow up. For now, however, will do what they can to make a difference in wildlife world.
"It makes me feel good because I think I am having a good impact on the world when I am doing this," a thoughtful Bretton said.
The cookbook sells for $10 and the 2009 calendar is just $15. If you would like to purchase either, email the Laoret brothers. This year's tally is $500 and counting.
