Granbury ISD Forbids Eyebrow Shaving
GRANBURY (CBS 11 News) ―
An announcement to students at Granbury Middle School is raising a few eyebrows. The principal told students anyone who had shaved their eyebrows needed to grow them back during the winter break.
The school says shaved eyebrows is a gang look. They reminded students that that is against school policy.
Look anywhere on the internet and the gang look is there. Youtube video shows kids how to cut 'corners' in seconds. You can even find cartoon images of the eyebrow cut that appeal to younger kids.
The problem is - shaved eyebrows have a shady connection to gangs.
The cuts have popped-up at Granbury Middle School... a place that according to some parents has had a gang problem. Parent Trisha Proctor says her son has experience it first-hand. "He's been having problems with some kids that are supposedly in some gangs here," she told CBS 11 News.
Some other Granbury students say some of their fellow students are alleged gang members. "I've seen them have gang signs all over their binders and hands and arms and everything," said student Lawyer Foster.
Now the school wants the kids to 'cut-out' the eyebrow cuts. "The campus staff and the principal always take proactive actions to make sure the students have an environment where they can learn," said Jeff Meador, with the Granbury Independent School District.
Proctor is one parent who would like to take enforcement even further. "I don't think they should be able to color their hair, [have] piercings, or anything like that, especially at that age, I think that's just crazy," she said.
Students who don't grow their eyebrows back during the winter break will be punished they'll have to participate in a program where they're helping out and cleaning up.
Winter break in the Granbury ISD begins Friday.
