Mesquite Fake Cop Report Was Fake

MESQUITE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Reports of a police impersonator in Mesquite have turned out to be false, according to authorities.

On Wednesday, a woman by the name of Shelby Lee Knight-Lacey told police that she was stopped along Interstate 635 by a fake cop who zapped her with "some kind of Taser-like device." She even described the impersonator as a black male with a scar on the right side of his neck and a spider tattoo on his right hand.

Knight-Lacey told police that, after refusing to exit her vehicle, she was shocked by the impersonator with what was described as a stun baton or a cattle prod.

However, on Thursday, authorities in Mesquite determined that the alleged victim had lied about the attack.

Just before the holiday shopping season, the city installed surveillance cameras to monitor some of the city intersections. Investigators reviewed video taken at the time and location of the alleged attack, but found nothing.

Knight-Lacey then admitted to making up the attack as a way of getting sympathy from her husband, with whom she was having a financial dispute.

Investigators in Mesquite are now in the process of preparing a False Report case.
