Dallas Community Fights Against Gang Activity

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― In far northeast Dallas, a low-income apartment community is targeting its youngsters after a disturbing video was discovered.

The video, called "Shiloh Hood," shows "just another day" in the life of the boys in the Shiloh Village Apartments community. The young men are playing gangster gladiators in one-on-one duels.

People who watched the video were able to see how kids gravitate to gang culture, and they want it to stop. So the apartment community managers called gang prevention specialist Gail Washington.

"Most of the parents have seen that video. Many came to me and said they were outraged and they don't think it is a correct way for a child to play," said Washington.

The apartment complex and its tenants say stopping the tide from wannabe to gonna-be gang bangers means working together now.

Jacqueline Brown has a 17 year old son. The video should be a wake up call for all Shiloh Village families, she says. "The majority of these parents… some of them are willing to strive for help, to prevent the gang thing," said Brown.

Other parents say the video simply shows children horse playing, and there is no connection to gang activity. However, they did say they will watch their kids to be sure they are not involved in any gangs.

"The wake up call was the video," said Washington. "To the novice eyes, it's just some kids possibly playing. To a gang members eyes, it's some kids who want a challenge. They're trying to step up to be gang members."
