Church Helping Some Get Their Finances In Order

GRAPEVINE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Some people are praying for financial help in this economy.  With the current economic situation, some people are banking on their faith to keep them afloat.  Some believers say there is no better classroom than church to learn about getting their financial house in order.

As Leslie Rigoulot kneeled her prayer was for her and her family to get out of debt.  Rigoulot said her financial situation, "kept me up at night."

Rigoulot's husband is a pilot and when the airlines made reductions a few years ago their family income was reduced by close to 30-percent.  "We were continuing to spend money as if we were making money and we weren't," Rigoulot explained.

Rigoulot then went to a class facilitated by Billy Szenderey.  For 13 weeks students watched videos by financial expert Dave Ramsey.  The videos mix financial information with biblical messages.

"There's one about the lender is the master and the borrower is the slave," said Rigoulot.  "Every time I would go to use a credit card I would think 'Do I really want to be a slave?'"

Along with words from the bible the videos offered practical lessons.  Over the weeks students learned seven principals – they were:

How to save a $1,000 emergency fund
Pay off debt
Save for 3-6 months of expenses
Invest 15-percent of household income
Save a college fund
How to pay off your home
Build wealth and give

Once again tough economic times are threatening the Rigoulot financial situation.  The wife and mother said, "The airlines are going through negotiations with pilots right now and that's frightening."

But this time, Rigoulot said her family has learned to save money and are better prepared for what the economy may bring.  In fact, the class helped Rigoulot so much that she is now going to teach it.

The next class at the First Presbyterian Church in Grapevine is being taught Wednesday.  Click here for more information about classes being taught at other area churces.
