Ft. Hood First Responders Talk About Chaotic Scene

By Arezow Doost
FORT HOOD (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Not even 24 hours after the massacre at Fort Hood, stories of courageous servicemen and women who responded to the scene are surfacing.

"It was people everywhere," explained Kim Dembrosky, a nurse at Ft. Hood's Darnall Army Medical Center.  "You don't expect to see this kind of thing here."

Dembrosky was running errands when she was paged about the shootings.

Army officials say Major Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, walked into a medical screening room at the post at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.  He was in uniform when he allegedly pulled out two handguns and opened fire in the crowded room.

Officials say Army Police Officer Kimberly Munley fired her own gun and took down Hasan.

"I was helping secure the buildings," said Army Police Officer Andrew Hagerman, from Lewisville "I had my weapon drawn making sure there were no more shooters."

Hagerman says at one point he saw Hasan on the ground with another officer by his side.

"He was unconscious at the time he was not speaking or anything like that," Hagerman said of Hasan.

Officials don't know why Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, allegedly opened fire.

Investigators from the FBI, the military and even the Texas Rangers are investigating.

Meantime, those close to what happened say they're trying to deal with it and make sense of it.

"After I got home I was thinking, 'you never know what these Army guys go through all the time,'" said Dembrosky.

There are extra counselors on the post to help those who were traumatized by the shooting.

Hasan is at a nearby hospital in stable condition. He is in custody. The shooting victims are all said to be in stable condition as well.
