FW Police Get Creative In Face Of Tighter Budget

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Fort Worth police are dealing with a tighter budget this year.  But they still have to fight crime.  Today, the department announced one step it's taking to stay ahead of the criminals.

"We're going to be more aggressive in 2009 than we've ever been in the previous five years," said Chief Jeffrey Halstead.  "And we're not tolerating any offense."

The department will look at new daily crime reports and target any areas with the smallest hint of a crime spike.

They'll focus on property crimes like burglary and robbery, and neighborhood crimes like drug dealing and graffiti.  Police officials expect that the new daily reports will let them react quickly before small increases in the crime rate become bigger ones.

The department also plans to team current campus police officers with gang and neighborhood units. And they'll have to do it with one very important goal in mind: not cutting into already strained city budgets.

"Our financial challenges in the city are very sensitive to the police department," Halstead said, "and we are utilizing and maximizing our overtime through the use of [community] grants."
