TARCO Deputies Raid Illegal 8-Liner Game Rooms
(CBS 11 / TXA 21)
Several people were arrested, dozens of 8-liner games confiscated and tens of thousands of dollars seized during a raid on five businesses Friday morning.
Tarrant County Sheriff officials raided the game rooms along Jacksboro Highway looking for illegal use of 8-liner machines.
When officials raided the game rooms, they were open and full of customers. Many were arrested for illegal gambling while others faced arrest for outstanding felony warrants.
The following companies were raided:
-- Ok Arcade, 7601 Jacksboro Highway
-- The Pot Of Gold, 7611 Jacksboro Highway
-- I Don't Care, 7621 Jacksboro Highway
-- The Beach House, 7703 Jacksboro Highway
-- Southern Gold, 7707 Jacksboro Highway
Officials stress that having the machines is not illegal, it's how the games award players.
According to state law, 8-liner games cannot award cash prizes or prizes worth more than $5, which tallies to more than 10 times the amount of the initial wager.
Officials say game rooms like those raided are breeding grounds for crimes like armed robbery, since criminals know they have lots of cash on hand.
Last month, an Arlington man was killed at the Bida L.A. Game Room in the 2500 block of E. Arkansas Lane. Ali Aziz worked as a security guard at the business. Two people were arrested days later for the crime.
The Sheriff's Department has rented trucks to haul away the nearly 250 confiscated machines and other items -- plasma TVs, prizes, surveillance equipment and book keeping records seized during the raid.
This is the largest raid on illegal gambling sites the Tarrant County Sheriffs Office has conducted since 2003.
