Undercover Garland Narcotics Cop Shoots Suspect

by Seema Mathur
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― One man is in the hospital after he was shot by an undercover Garland Police Department narcotics officer.

Police tell CBS 11 News the undercover officer was meeting with a suspected drug dealer outside a gas station in Northeast Dallas at about 2:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Minutes into the drug deal, police say a blue car pulled up and the driver accused the undercover officer of being a policeman.

The driver then pulled a gun and pointed it at the undercover officer.  The narcotics officer then pulled his own gun and shot the driver several times.

"Anytime an officer shoots is when he is fear," said Officer Joe Harn, Garland Police spokesman. "He had a weapon pointed at him, he felt his life was in danger… that's when he shot."

The driver of the blue car was hit several times.  He's at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.  There's no word on his condition.

The suspected drug dealer is in police custody now.

The undercover officer was not hurt.
