4-Year-Old Girl Dies In Hurst Car Accident
Driver In Fatal Hurst Accident Had Previous DWI Record
HURST (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A 4-year-old girl was killed Friday night when the car she was riding in was rear-ended by a man who has a history of driving while intoxicated.
According to police, Jose Ortega was coming from a restaurant about 9:30 p.m. when the crash happened in the 100 block of south Loop 820. Officials won't release the name of the establishment.
The 32-year-old was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter, but it's not the first time he's been to jail for driving while intoxicated charges. Each of those times, he was sentenced to jail.
Records show the first time Ortega was arrested for DWI was in February 1999. The next DWI arrest occurred a month later. For each of the first two offenses, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail.
In August 2002, Ortega's third DWI arrest earned him three years in jail.
His family did not want to speak on camera, but expressed their sympathy for the family of Kaitlyn Sanchez, who died in the late night crash.
Police said the 4-year-old was strapped into a booster seat in the back of the station wagon.
