Collin County: No Plans For Public H1N1 Clinic

PLANO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Not a day goes by Julie Hicks doesn't call The Texas Star Pharmacy to see if they've received its shipment of the H1N1 vaccine.

"I think they're tired of hearing my voice."

She's 4 months pregnant, and neither her OB/GYN nor her son's pediatrician has it.  So she'll settle for a seasonal flu shot for her son.

"I get more and more concerned every time I watch the news and hear about a death.  I saw another one today that prompted me to come in here today to see if they happen to have them."

Ann Wilburn went through the same worry until her young son's specialist received the H1N1 vaccine.  But she had to go to Dallas.

"I realize everyday when I hear someone is diagnosed with H1N1 that I'm lucky my son was able to get it."

Collin County has been slow to receive the shipments.  It ordered 42,000 doses, and has received 7,000 so far, 6500 Just this past Monday.  But you won't find the massive clinics set-up at the health department here like those in Dallas and Tarrant Counties.

County Judge Keith Self blames it on nationwide distribution problems, but says you won't find the massive clinics set up at the health department like those in Dallas and Tarrant Counties.

"We don't believe we need to have clinics of our own because we have these relationships with clinics in Collin County."

He says the county doesn't act as a primary care facility for it's residents, but they are distributing the vaccine to lower income residents, including at least one Primacare facility in Plano, but its available here only to pregnant women and their children.

Pharmacist Donna Barsky is still waiting for her 700 doses of the H1N1 vaccine. Even though private doctors offices and clinics have received 100,000 doses.

"It's very frustrating."

Private doctors, clinics and pharmacies have received nearly 100,000 doses.

"It's been a little aggravating.  My main concern here is that my critical patients especially receive the vaccine."

Meanwhile, Dallas County started sending some of its doses of the H1N1 vaccine to grocery stores and pharmacies this week.  Tarrant County will soon open a clinic for some of its residents with more than 14,000 doses.
