Dallas Residents Deal With Triple-Digit Heat

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Two-a-day practices kicked off at James Madison High School near Fair Park in Dallas. With triple digit temperatures pounding down on the field, the players were given water breaks every ten minutes.

Water is also in high demand at The Bridge in Dallas where the new homeless shelter is at capacity.

"We have 700 people or so staying here right now which is largely influenced by the heat because our nightly census has gone up as it's gotten hotter," explained Bridge worker Jay Dunn.

Whether they were hiding from it or working in it, it was hard for anyone to find a ray of sunshine in 107 degree heat.

At the Farmers Market in Dallas, Cindy and Monty Wilson braved the heat in search of fresh fruits and vegetables.  It's no big deal for Cindy who says it's all part of being a Texan. "I love it hot. I like the heat," she said. "I'm from Texas."

The new homeless center has put in a request for outdoor misters, fans and more water fountains.

So far, there have been five confirmed heat deaths across North Texas. Health officials say they are investigating seven other deaths.

There have been 141 heat-related illnesses in Dallas County alone.
