Fort Worth Police Officers Overcome By Heat

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Some Fort Worth police officers suddenly found themselves overcome by the heat on Friday while chasing a suspect near the Trinity River.

The officers were chasing two men who were trying to steal tires off of a trailer on the shoulder of Interstate-30 near Beach Street. Officers chased the suspects through a wooded area, but the men jumped into the Trinity River and got away.

Four officers who were involved in the foot chase were taken to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. They were all suffering from heat exhaustion.

The police department says several things contributed to the health situation.

-- The 101 degree heat took a toll.

-- The officers were outfitted in heavy gear, such as bullet proof vests and utility gun belts.

All four officers have been treated and released from the hospital, and are expected to be back to work on Saturday after rest and hydration.

A fifth Fort Worth officer, who was not involved in the chase, also ended up at the hospital today with heat exhaustion. He has also been treated and released, and will be back at work on Saturday.

The Fort Worth Police Department says this is the first time in recent history that so many officers have gone down because of the heat in the course of one day.

The police department says the health situation is a reminder that everyone needs to take the heat seriously and take precautions when outdoors.
