Rowlett High's Revue Of 'Rent' Will Go On
ROWLETT (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The show will go on for some Rowlett High School students.
Students had feared they would never raise the curtain for "Rent, the High School Edition."
Last month,
the Garland School Board cancelled the musical production after parents complained about the show's topics of homosexuality, AIDS and drug use.
But
Dallas radio station Mix 102.9 is springing to cover the cost of sheet music and a performance place for the budding young stars to sing.
"When we let them know that we had a place, we had an outlet and we wanted them to do it if they were up for it, they were thrilled and excited," said Mix 102.9 morning show host Tony Zazza. "It was great to see the smiles on their faces."
The performance will now take place on the SMU campus.
For legal reasons, it won't be the full musical, but the young performers say they just want to sing.
"When we found out we were going to do it, it was like, 'Ahhhhhhh!' It was so awesome," said Amy, a student at Rowlett High School.
There will be two performances on Saturday, January 31 at Caruth Auditorium in the Owens Fine Arts Building. The first show will be at 3 p.m. and the second show will be at 7 p.m.
There's no admission fee, but there is a suggested donation of $5 per ticket. Any donations will go to charity
D.I.F.F.A. Dallas.
