Hispanic Activists Call For Boycott In Irving
IRVING (CBS 11 News) ―
Hispanic activists are calling for a city-wide shutdown in Irving.
On November 15, Accion America said they would like to see all Irving businesses closed for the day. They are urging everyone, including students, to participate.
The group will also hold a massive public meeting at Irving City Hall that day.
The move is the latest form of protest against the city's criminal alien program. The program allows federal immigration agents access to the jail to determine the residency status of prisoners.
Opponents feel the city's policy of only accepting a Texas driver's license or ID card as proof of identification will harm illegal immigrants and promote deportation.
They also say it has caused an atmosphere of fear and racism in the city.
Eduardo Osoria, an Irving business owner, said he is opposed to the city's policies, but he doesn't support the boycott either.
"If Accion America is asking me to close my business for one day I will, but I don't really approve of the boycott," said Osoria. "I don't think the boycott is right for anybody."
Irving Mayor Herbert Gears said he is not afraid of a boycott. Instead, he hopes on November 15 those who support his policies will come to Irving to shop.
