The Hoop: It's Not Just For Kids Anymore
ARLINGTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
What you once did as a kid is now one of the hottest trends in fitness.
'Hooping,' as in hula-hooping, is becoming so popular the exercise is featured in this month's "Southern Living" magazine, and a North Texas expert just opened her own hooping exercise studio in Arlington.
"You're literally in this center of energy, literally in this moment," said owner/instructor, Geri McNiece. "I'm toned everywhere. I'm gonna be 50 in January.
McNiece discovered her love for the hoop after it not only uncovered the svelte body she'd been missing, but helped release incredible joy.
And that was something she couldn't keep to herself. So, she is opening a full-time facility in Arlington called The Hoopshack, featuring official Hoopnotica curriculum.
"People are hungry for happiness," McNiece explained. "They're hungry to get fit. But more importantly, they're hungry to have a good time, especially in this world today."
As I discovered, a critical key to successful hooping is an adult-sized hoop. At just under two pounds, it is heavier than the hoop you played with as a kid and moves at slower rate, which gives you a little more control.
Ab-burning, booty-firming concentration is required every step of the way. All the while, McNiece says you're burning an amazing number of calories.
"Anywhere from 300-400 up to 600-800 if you're intense, in an hour."
If you're interested in twisting around, check it out at The Hoopshack, located at 2320 Superior Dr. Ste. D in Arlington
