Plano Church Steps In To Feed Collin County Hungry
By Arezow Doost
PLANO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Collin County is feeding the hungry. St. Andrew United Methodist Church Seven Loaves Food Pantry in Plano will be open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday to serve the hundreds of families in need.
The idea for the pantry came to life after Sharon Hasley, wife of the Senior Pastor, heard about the growing and changing face of hunger in her backyard.
St. Andrews plans to develop its Seven Loaves Food Pantry into a "Super Pantry" since there is no public food distribution center in Collin County.
The church is seeing families who say they never thought they would be in this position.
According to the North Texas Food Bank, there are 43,000 people living in poverty in Collin County. The church started out with serving just 100 families each month, but that number grew to 900 families needing help every month now.
Families who go to the pantry can receive a week's worth of food. The church is trying to get some refrigerators and freezers so the pantry can provide frozen meats, dairy and fresh produce.
The small distribution center's regular hours are Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This week, because of Thanksgiving, the pantry is open on Tuesday.
Hasley says the hope is that in 2010, the church will be able to open the pantry for two more days a week.
The church is located at 5801 Plano Parkway in Plano. To donate or volunteer at the Seven Loaves Food Pantry, call 214-291-8085, visit
