Ban On Smoking In Public Being Considered In Hurst
HURST (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Hurst could be the latest North Texas city to snuff out smoking in public places.
The city is considering an ordinance that would prohibit smoking in four specific areas: restaurants, bars, city properties and entertainment venues.
Mayor Richard Ward said the initiative is meant to preserve the overall health of the community. At this point, he said the council is considering several options when it comes to the wording of the ordinance.
Although a proposed ordinance is still under discussion, the thought of it is already generating a lot of buzz among citizens.
For independent restaurant owner Joyce Russell, it could mean bad news for her business as she's already been burned by bans in the past.
"When Arlington passed its smoking ordinance, we had Santabucos restaurant," said Russell, owner of Italianni's in Bedford. "We were losing, so we cut our losses and shut it."
Ward said he plans to pick up this issue at the beginning of the year with a projected implantation by early summer.
