Man Kills Wife, Self In Car Attack At Wal-Mart
HURST (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A man and his wife are both dead after an incident at the Hurst Wal-Mart store on Harwood and Precinct Line Road.
According to police, 50-year-old Sandra Bentley walked out of the Wal-Mart store and into the front parking lot. Apparently her husband, later identified by police as 53-year-old Curtis Bentley, was waiting in a dark-colored Chrysler in a back parking lot.
According to witnesses, when Sandra Bentley got near the end of the parking lot Curtis Bentley accelerated and ran her down from behind. "We have indication that there was acceleration prior to the impact that was somewhat of a distance back behind the vehicle," Hurst Police Department Sgt. Crain Teague said.
After striking the woman the vehicle rolled forward some 50 yards and Curtis Bentley then apparently shot himself.
Police responded to the scene believing that there had been an auto-pedestrian accident. When officers arrived witnesses directed them to the Chrysler where they found the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
CBS 11 News spoke with a vendor from the store that identified Sandra Bentley as a checker who worked at Wal-Mart. Vendor Judy Rosko described the victim as always upbeat. "I always buy things when I'm leaving of course and she just always was in a good mood and always a very, very happy woman," she said. "And I heard she was going on break today when she walked out."
Sandra Bentley was taken to a Fort Worth hospital in extremely serious condition and was later pronounced dead.
Police established a crime scene area in the parking lot and cut off one lane of parking, but the store remained open the entire time. Beside Sandra and Curtis Bentley, no one else was injured.
