Fundraiser Being Held For Boy With Half A Heart

Arezow Doost
PONDER (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A North Texas boy is on a list to get a new heart, but it comes with a pretty hefty price tag. To help, residents in the Town of Ponder, just outside Denton, and several other communities are coming together to help the family with medical expenses.

Trevor Sanders looks like just any other 12-year-old, but the 6th grader can't run and play and has to ride around in a golf cart and take it very easy. "I ride it so I don't have to walk and get short of breath," he explained.

Trevor was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS); which means he only has half a heart.

By the time he was four years old Trevor had already had six surgeries. While the condition is very serious, his parents say Trevor has exceeded the expectations of his doctors. "They told us he would never walk or talk," said his mother, Sheri Sanders.

In March Trevor was put on the waiting list for a new heart at Children's Medical Center in Dallas. "It's scary and nervous at the same time," the little boy said of the wait.

Now Trevor's father, Monty Sanders, wears a pager at all times. Monty is not only thinking positive about his son receiving a heart, but that the surgery will be life changing for him. "I'm excited because I hope for once he doesn't hurt, and his legs don't hurt, and his arms don't hurt, and he can be a normal kid for a change."

The heart transplant alone could costs $600,000 and then there are additional expenses afterward. To help the Sanders family, a fundraiser is being held at Ponder High School on July 11th.

The Heart of Gold Dinner and Auction is being sponsored by Bubbarosa BBQ, The Exchange Gold Store and USFI Marketing Communications. All donations are welcomed, but organizers say it would be great if someone donated a better golf cart for Trevor to ride in.

While the family does have medical insurance they say any little bit will help. "I just always want him to be here and I just want him to get a perfect heart. He is my only child," Sheri said lovingly.
