Crooks Cash In On Stolen Credit Cards In New Way

by J.D. Miles
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Cedar Hill police are on the hunt for a thief who turned a stolen wallet into a lot of cash.

Detectives released video of a woman captured by a security camera leaving a Target store in Cedar Hill.

Police say she bought more than $3,000 worth of gift cards at local retailers using a woman's stolen credit cards.

The victim is a Dallas university professor who says she's spent a lot of hours and money trying to restore her credit rating after the theft.

Police say buying gift cards has become a popular way for purse snatchers and identity thieves to maximize the value of stolen credit cards before they are canceled.

"I think they're the scum of the earth. They take your identity away. I don't know if I'll ever feel comfortable knowing that someone is out there and has all of that information," says Nancy McLaughlin, theft victim.

Anyone with information about the woman is asked to contact the Cedar Hill Police Department. You can see video of the woman clicking the play on the first video in the rotation on the upper right hand corner of the screen.
