Plans In The Works For Immigration March In Irving
by Bud Gillett
IRVING (CBS 11 News) ―
Less than two weeks ago, nearly 1,000 people demonstrated at Irving City Hall. The group opposed the police's policy on sharing jail information with federal agents.
Now, leaders in the Hispanic community are planning another protest for Saturday.
The march will start nearly ten blocks away from city hall and will force the closing of some city streets.
"Whatever title you put to it, a parade, a rally, a gathering, as long as it's mobile, it's moving through city streets and thoroughfares, there has to be a set of guidelines for that," said Irving Police Officer David Tull.
"Obviously there are some costs associated with this," said Carols Quintanilla. "Our position is Irving created this uproar."
Quintanilla says his group Accion America will not fight any reasonable fees.
"I think the City of Irving has as much culpability in having us there," he said. "They should absorb some of the cost also."
Accion America representatives first met with city officials about a parade permit on Wednesday.
A normally week's long process is being condensed. They will meet with police Thursday to discuss the potential number of officers needed, barricades and other items.
"They are in the midst of the process of getting a proper permit," said Officer Tull. "At this point, we haven't gotten any information back yet."
"We are working with the City of Irving, and we expect the City of Irving to work with us," said Quintanilla.
The final costs won't be known until a meeting Thursday.
