FORT HOOD (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
It's been more than 48 hours. And Corporal Nathan Hewitt still hears the gunshots ringing in his ears.
"I heard the yell and then I heard the shots fired."
The 27-year-old from Indiana thought it was a drill. But when he heard one shot after another he quickly tried to take cover. He was shot twice.
"I actually didn't realize I had been shot until they took me to another building and lifted my pant leg and blood started coming out both sides, pretty much."
Hewitt says at one point he spotted Major Nidal Malik Hasan on the rampage.
"I stuck my head up and he was way on the other side of some dividers and all that like that so I told some people to follow me. I don't know if they followed me or not because as soon as I said that I was trying to get out the door."
As the investigation continues, Army officials say it's clear Hasan fired at least 100 rounds inside the Fort Hood Soldier Readiness processing Center.
They have talked to dozens of witnesses and victims trying to piece together what happened.
"We have confirmed that the suspect fired both inside the readiness center and outside we are still processing the crime scene tonight" said Chris Grey with the Army Criminal Investigative Division.
Corporal Hewitt is praying for his friends. Three were killed after the mass shootings.
He's also thinking about his deployment. Despite what's happened Hewitt still hopes to leave for Iraq in January.
"I can't make any sense of it. I mean, I guess they say that things happen for a reason. But I have no idea what this reason would have been."
As for the others who were wounded, 17 remain in the hospital Saturday night.
