2 Die In Irving Motorcycle Accident

IRVING (CBS 11 News) ― Two friends on motorcycles were killed Thursday night when they tried to merge from southbound Highway 161 onto westbound Highway 183.

One rider, Derek Smith of Bedford died . His friend, Robert Wright from North Richland Hills, died at a hospital. They were both 18.

Investigators believe speed was a factor as the pair attempted to merge on the roadways.

Initial reports show one of the cyclists hit the concrete barrier, lost control and was thrown over the wall. The second cyclist then collided with the first. He, too, was ejected, as well, and fell about 40 feet to the ground.

Police said large groups of cyclists are common on Irving highways, but at this point they believe the two were riding alone. A witness called 911.

Friday, a man brought us video that he says shows Smith and Wright performing stunts with a group of cyclists.  Bryan Bailey says the video was shot while riding with the group shortly before the deadly wreck.  You can see Bailey's video at right.
