Irving Animal Shelter Euthanizes Wrong Dog

By Marianne Martinez
IRVING (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A local animal shelter admits it euthanized the wrong dog.  Now the dog's owners want answers.

Dea Phegley says her pit bull, Star, broke through the fence sometime Tuesday evening.  Irving animal control workers left a note on the Phegleys' door, asking them to pick up their dog.

When Dea called the Irving animal shelter Wednesday morning, she was told her dog had been accidentally euthanized.  Workers at the animal shelter had meant to euthanize a male pit bull that was in the same kennel.

"She didn't deserve this," Phegley said.  "No animal deserves this - especially not a tame family animal."

Officials with the city of Irving they fully admit to the mistake.  They have apologized to the Phegley family.

It's not the first time there have been problems at the Irving shelter.

In June, four dogs adopted from the shelter had Parvo when they were adopted.  The highly contagious dog disease can be deadly.

And in 2006, several Irving residents complained at a city council meeting that workers were neglecting animals in the shelter.
