Residents of a Kaufman County town have more questions than answers after the bodies of two people were found in a culvert.
The bodies were found off of Kaufman County Road 280 in the town of Post Oak Bend.
The Kaufman County Sheriff has been tight-lipped about their investigation, leaving people in the town with a lot of questions.
On Thursday, law enforcement sources told us the two had been identified as 30-year-old Fionna Olander and 10-year-old Korryn Threadgill of Addison. Later in the day, the Kaufman County Sheriff's office confirmed their identities and said they were mother and daughter. Authorities have not yet said how they died other than by homicidal violence.
The sheriff's office also said Thursday afternoon that police had arrested a suspect in the killing. 37-year-old Martin McKee of Farmers Branch is in jail and charged with capital murder. The sheriff's office would not say how or even if McKee knew the victims.
Post Oak Bend has a population of just over 400 people. It's a place people go to get away from big-city crime. Barbara Bedrick grew up here. "You know your neighbors, know everyone, you feel safe."
But on Tuesday, a passerby found the bodies of two unidentified females along one of the town's main roads.
Now, residents are on alert. "To find two women in a culvert like that is pretty scary" says resident Terrie Mikus.
Residents believe the bodies were brought to the town from somewhere else.
"I think if it was someone who was murdered from the community, that we would already heard so and so is missing" says Barbara Bedrick.
Sheriff's officials did say there was no reason for the public to be concerned for their safety, but wouldn't elaborate on the reasons behind that.
Still, residents say it's a reminder that no matter how small the town - crime can happen anywhere.
"Because you live in an area like this, why would you be exempt from dealing with crime?" asks Terrie Mikus.
Town officials say these would be the first murders in Post Oak Bend since the town was incorporated in 1978.
