Knitters Needing Help As Project Deadline Nearing
Arezow Doost
ARLINGTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A group of ladies in Arlington have turned their hobby into helping soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The women have been busy knitting helmet liners for the troops.
CBS 11 first introduced the group to the world back in April. When we went back for a visit, the women said they can't keep up with the requests.
Everyday for months now Yarn Heaven in Arlington fills up with chatter and laughter.
"It's a labor of love" says knitter Cheryl Rocha
A hobby for these women has turned into something much more.
"When I first started this I didn't think it would get as big as it did" says store owner Tarie Williams.
Williams started knitting helmet liners after a marine inspired her back in April.
"Keeps their neck and face warm."
Since then she's rallied dozens of customers and friends.
"I hope that the person who gets this will be able to come home that's what I think" says Rocha
The group's latest project is donating 3,000 helmet liners to a unit about to be deployed to Iraq. They've already made a thousand.
"This is the result of your hard work, there is a lot of love, time and energy that goes into making these."
And there's even a special note written by students and tucked away inside each helmet liner.
"This is very cool, I think this is very special" says Army Colonel Paul Hernandez.
So special the army refers to this group as yarn heaven warriors.
The ladies at Yarn Heaven are looking for more volunteers. They need to make at least 2,000 more helmet liners in the next few weeks to ship to the unit that is deploying.
