Job Fair Leaves Most Former DISD Employees Wanting
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
It was billed as an opportunity to find new work. Hundreds of laid off Dallas Independent School District teachers attended a special job fair Tuesday, but most are still looking for work.
The job fair was supposed to help heal a big hurt, but it didn't work out that way.
More than 450 former DISD educators and other employees, all let go because of job cuts, pounded the pavement at the job fair, hoping for an immediate employment.
School districts from across the state and country set up recruiting booths, spent the day interviewing teachers who had jobs just a week ago.
But after all was said and done, only a handful of former DISD employees walked away with jobs; everyone else just seemed frustrated. "I'm not feeling real positive about it because what I'm doing
I'm handing out résumés," explained laid off teacher Willie Deloris Zachary. "The people are telling me to go online and apply, which we could have done that anyway."
It was said that 4,000 jobs would be available through the job fair, but if there were it was hard to tell.
The laid off employees will still be paid by the DISD until January 2009, but most don't want to wait until their funds dry up to find a job.
