Denton County Child Dies After Being Left In Van

AUBREY (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A 14-month-old boy died after being left alone in his family's van for about an hour on Sunday afternoon, officials report.

The toddler was in a parked vehicle outside the family's home in the Savannah subdivision neighborhood in Aubrey, a town about 12 miles northeast of Denton. The temperature in Denton at 3 p.m. Sunday was 102 degrees.

Police said that they received a called from a distraught female around 2:20 p.m. Sunday afternoon. According to police, a mother, father and three children went to a local water park. When they returned, each parent thought someone had taken the toddler out of the car.

"The mother parked in front of the residence and unloaded the vehicle," said Sgt. Roger Griggs with the Denton County Sheriff's Office. "Apparently the mother forgot to remove the child from the vehicle."

A while later, police said that the parents noticed the toddler missing and the mother found the child still in the car. According to reports, he was unresponsive.

"The father was on the ground screaming and crying and just distraught," said Jessica Gonzalez, one of the family's neighbors.

The child, identified as Markus Anthony Lewis, was taken to a Dallas hospital by helicopter, where he later died.

Neighbors congregated and prayed for the boy on Sunday evening. "Anybody watching, try not to judge just pray," said Gonzalez.

Deputies said that they are still looking into the case and have not decided yet whether or not charges will be filed.

Child Protective Services is also conducting an investigation to determine whether or not the family's other two children, ages 8 and 10, should be removed from the home.
