Joe Pool Lake Camper Dies After Lightning Strike

GRAND PRAIRIE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Despite reports a Joe Pool Lake camper heeded impending weather and was packing up to leave, he was struck by lightning and later died.

Dexter Leonard of Fort Worth was camping at Lynn Creek Park Tuesday when the storm clouds gathered and according to firefighters, the 22-year-old made the safe to decision to leave.

He was loading his equipment into his vehicle when the fatal bolt struck just after 7 p.m.

It's not clear how much warning he had before the storm was overhead.

Firefighters arrived quickly and paramedics performed CPS all the way to Medical Center of Arlington.

He died shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Lightning is the second deadliest weather strike with flash flooding the No. 1 weather-related killer.

Experts say July is a particularly dangerous month for lightning strikes because of all of the outdoor activities.

On average, 62 people are killed in the U.S. every year from lightning strikes.

Here are some reminders during storms:

• If you can hear the thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning! Take cover immediately.
• Safe shelters include any four-sided building or a vehicle. (Unlike tornado season, it's safe to take shelter in a vehicle during a thunderstorm.)
• Stay away from windows, open areas, trees, metal and water.
