Fiery Wreck Kills 1 On Loop 820 In Fort Worth
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
One man is dead after a fiery truck wreck on Northeast Loop 820 in Fort Worth on Friday afternoon.
Police said around 12:45 p.m., westbound traffic on 820 at about Main Street was backed up because of construction in the area.
A westbound cement truck came across an overpass on the highway at normal freeway speeds, police said, but the driver apparently didn't realize traffic had slowed.
The cement truck smashed into a Nissan sedan and instantly killed the 25-year-old man who was driving it.
The cement truck then crashed into a tanker truck and burst into flames. Police said it was lucky the tanker was carrying sludge and not fuel.
One witness said the cement truck driver intentionally plowed into the tanker instead of a long line of slowed cars just ahead of it.
The drivers of the two trucks were transported to a local hospital. Their conditions are not known.
Police shut down both sides of the highway for several hours while they investigated the wreck. Eastbound 820 reopened at about 2:20 p.m. and westbound lanes followed just before 6:00 p.m.
The identity of the man who died has not been released.
