100s Of Homes Stand In Way Of Proposed Dallas Road

Compiled From Staff Reports
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Hundreds of homes stand in the way of the Loop Nine project in Southeast Dallas.

The state is looking at two possible routes that start at Highway 287 in Midlothian, go through South Dallas and end at I-20 in Mesquite.

TxDOT estimates about 400 properties will be affected by the road, but worried homeowner groups claim the number is closer to 1,200.

Thursday night, hundreds showed up at a hearing in Cedar Hill to express their concerns about losing their property values and their way of life.

TxDOT planners and local leaders say the road has been proposed to go in the same general area for 14 years. At the meeting, they explained the need for the 40-mile road, which is part of a planned regional highway system designed to meet traffic needs in coming decades.

"It doesn't matter where you put it. You're going to have this kind of rancor to some degree," said Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price.

Neighborhood residents say they will continue their fight. The project still needs federal approval, but even with that it still won't be a done deal. TxDOT will make the final decision.
