No Mail Delivery For Some Duncanville Residents

Arezow Doost
DUNCANVILLE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Some Duncanville residents say they haven't gotten their mail in weeks.

One resident of the Merrill Square Apartments told CBS 11 News that it's been 30 days since he received mail.  "Every day, three times a day, for the last three weeks, I've been coming and checking," said apartment resident Gerald Washington.

Postal officials say the problem is with the locked mailboxes at the complex.  The box has been damaged; with locks broken on some boxes and others simply impossible to get into.

The mailboxes of at least 24 residents have been compromised.

Management at the complex told CBS 11 News that there have been a number of mailbox break-ins and that because of the damage the entire box needs replacing.  Property manager Wylene Johnson said, "I understand all the tenants' frustrations so we are working as quickly as possible to get everything taken care of."  Johnson told CBS 11 News that they hope to have the new box in place by Friday.

U.S Postal Service spokesperson McKinney Boyd said mail carriers have had problems with the apartment complex for months.  "When that receptacle is damaged, or not in good shape, or ou can't deposit mail into it, then what happens is the postal service has to use a common sense approach and that common sense approach is to suspend delivery."

Meantime, post office officials say the responsibility is with the apartment complex and mail can't be delivered until the boxes are fixed.

The problem for residents is more than not having mail delivered; it's having access to it at all.  Many residents have gone to their local post office to pick up their mail and were told that isn't possible either, since post office workers don't have time to sort through all the mail individually.

For now the only way Merrill Square Apartment residents can received their mail is to fill out a postal form to suspend service, and then wait until their mail can be gathered for post office pick up.
