Mobile Home Residents Say 'Mail Service Is Shoddy'

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Residents of a mobile home park in Southeast Dallas are fed up with the postal service, because they say they're getting shoddy mail delivery.

According to some residents, both incoming and outgoing letters are being misplaced.

Brookside Village Manufactured Home Park resident Betty Bell said she was so disturbed by what she found two weeks ago that she took pictures.

The photos show a stack of mail, with no postmarks, bound with a rubber band. One can assume these were outgoing letters left for pickup. "You know it could be your bills, it could be loved ones, it could be someone you're trying to contact," Bell said of mail that is being compromised. "These things are important."

The problems with mail service have also made resident Lisa Bahm angry. "It's pitiful," she said after finding out that one of the letters, bundled with rubber bands, was hers. The envelope that was placed in the outgoing mail drop contained money being paid to a lawyer.

"It happens all the time, but it made me angry that day because it actually was mine and I knew I had put it in that morning and I expected it to already be to the lawyer's office and it wasn't," said Bahm.

There are six locations throughout the mobile home park for residents to collect their mail or send letters out.

Joan Lancaster says there are problems with the incoming mail as well. "It's really a nuisance," she said. "It bothers me too because, if I'm getting somebody else's mail – is somebody getting my mail?"

Residents told CBS 11 News that the same thing happened May 28th at a collection box located at the opposite end of the park. Looking for answers, CBS 11's Bud Gillett found the letter carrier, but the man said he couldn't talk.

The mail carrier referred CBS 11 to supervisors, but assured that the cases must be isolated, because it's not standard operating procedure for anyone's mail to be abandoned. The mail carrier promised to have a regional manager talk directly with unhappy residents at the mobile home park.
