Local Leaders Push For Main St. Stimulus Package

Reporting

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
There has been a bailout for banks, another for the big three automakers and now North Texas leaders want in on the action.
They were in Washington Monday pushing for a bailout for Main Street. Even if only a fraction of the things they want are approved, it could have a significant and long-term effect on the local economy.
Mayors released
this list (.pdf file) of construction projects they want to be a part of any stimulus package.
City leaders say road projects like the one at Parker and Central Expressway in Plano would help create thousands of jobs locally.
In Dallas, the list includes the third Calatrava Bridge near downtown, which the city says would create nearly 2,500 jobs.
Also on the list, the controversial proposed convention center hotel, which goes before voters this May. Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert says the nearly $500 million project would create 3,800 jobs.
Mayor Leppert says he hopes the stimulus package will be approved by congress next month and be ready for President-Elect Barack Obama's signature.
