Doctor Believes Richland Hills Baby Ingested Drugs

(CBS 11 News) A doctor who treated an 8-month-old at Cook Children's Hospital for possible methamphetamine exposure described it as a "pretty significant" dosage.

He said the drugs were either stuffed in the child's mouth or mixed in with food or formula.

Richland Hills Police reported early Friday morning the infant boy was taken to the hospital after a near four-hour stay at a his grandmother's house.

According to reports, the mother said she left the boy at the house in the 3100 block of Rufe Snow about 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

She told police when she picked up the infant about 2 p.m., he was "acting unusual and was very slow in responding" to her, police said in a news release.

Investigators met with Child Protective Services officials and laboratory results showed methamphetamine and amphetamine in the infant's system, officials said.

Later reports indicate the child also had caffeine and nicotine in his blood.

Richland Hills K9 unit searched the grandmother's house, but no illegal narcotics were found, police said.

Sources said the mother was recently released from a Texas Department of Corrections facility for family violence charges.

Both the mother and grandmother have "an extensive history" with Richland Hills police, they said.

Police said the report has not been completed, therefore, no warrants have been issued or arrests made.

Officials add the mother has admitted to police to using drugs.

Under an emergency order, CPS removed a 20-month old girl from the woman's custody.

Because of the holiday, a custody hearing was delayed until Monday.
