How Should Hinojosa Be Graded?
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The CEO of a local school system took a beating over fiscal mistakes that led to layoffs, but academic gains are evident. So which category should be used to gauge his effectiveness?
The board of education evaluates the performance of Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. But the criteria used in his job evaluation is under scrutiny.
Student Achievement, Financial Management and Stakeholder Satisfaction are key evaluation categories. But student success is poised to get a larger slice of the appraisal pie for Hinojosa.
The graduation rate, the overall passing rate on state-mandated academic tests, and how many students are college ready. 65 percent of Hinojosa's grade could be based on classroom performance.
Trustees and other stakeholders say financial management and other issues should not be minimized in his assessment.
"I would like to see the numbers raised, to see stakeholders raised a bit, finances should have a higher percentage, and we even out with student achievement" says DISD trustee Leigh Ann Ellis.
In other words, Hinojosa is not just the top teacher, he's the money-man. And fiscal management will likely be weighed more in his appraisal.
