Witness: Parkland Death Shouldn't Have Happened
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Funeral services were held today for Mike Herrera of Dallas.
He died at Parkland Hospital on Saturday after waiting 15 hours in the emergency room to a see doctor.
Another ER patient says she sat next to Herrera for ten hours during his stay.
The woman, who does not want to be identified, saw our Wednesday report about Herrera and was horrified to learn that the man she'd sat next to for so many hours had died.
"That was a great man who had a family and did not deserve to die," she said.
She told us one thing about him stood out to her when he walked through the door.
It was his hernias, which he had battled for a long time. "They were protruding hugely through his shirt! Huge!"
She also had to wait for hours to see a doctor. She waited in Parkland's emergency room for 12 hours before a doctor examined her staph infection.
Herrera waited 15 hours and then went into cardiac arrest.
"I knew he was declining," the woman said, "and I went up and said something to the nurse about me and him. She basically thought I was hysterical, and she had other things she was involved in doing."
Parkland's CEO, Dr. Ron Anderson, addressed Herrerra's death yesterday, saying the hospital would investigate. But Anderson was not available to respond to this woman's remarks today.
