Game Warden Warns Of Danger On Lakes

Compiled From Staff Reports
COLLIN COUNTY (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A teenager has been missing in Lake Lavon since Monday when the paddle boat he was riding in flipped over.

Crews continued their search for 18-year-old Michael A. Simmons Tuesday near Elm Creek Park.

Game Warden Garry Collins said Simmons and 16-year-old Kimberly Clayton were paddling when strong winds and rough water hit the boat. Neither one was wearing a life jacket.

"A small boat like that doesn't have any business on a 20,000-acre lake," said Collins.

According to police, "At the time of the accident, the wind speed was approximately 18 mph with 28 mph gusts, and the water temperature was between 59 and 64 F."

Kimberly was able to hang on to the boat for almost a mile and make it to shore. But her companion did not.

Over the weekend, a canoeist went missing in Lake Grapevine. Monday night officials found the body of a boater who fell into Lake Lewisville a week ago. Officials say none of those men were wearing life jackets either.

Collins stressed the importance of wearing a life vest, and also said it is important for boaters to be extra careful this time of year. The water is still cold, around 60 degrees, and spring storms can cause problems for boaters.

"Watch the weather. Make sure you know what's going on, what's coming in, because it doesn't take long for a front to move in this time of year," he said.
