Mockingbird Lane To Reopen Ahead Of Schedule

Many Residents Are Not Thrilled

HIGHLAND PARK (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Mockingbird Lane in Highland Park has undergone construction for nearly 15 months.

"We've thoroughly enjoyed it and feel like we have our neighborhood back," said Mockingbird Lane resident Gilbert Adam.

Of all things, construction has restored peace to this once busy street. Barricades keep traffic out and children in. But on November 22, Mockingbird will reopen four months ahead of schedule.

"It's very concerning as to the amount of traffic that will be on Mockingbird again," said June Halloway, who lives on Mockingbird.

Holloway's concern comes from experience. An SUV smashed through her son's house on the corner of Mockingbird and Hillcrest in 2000.

"She accelerated and came through the yard and then the house," she said.

Holloway and nearly every resident along Mockingbird fear that bumper to bumper traffic will once again add an element of danger to this upscale neighborhood.

It's why neighbors packed Highland Park Council meetings in 2007. They fought against a plan to widen Mockingbird and to add ten left-hand turning lanes. Neighbors argued it would only increase traffic.

In the end, the street was widened from Preston to the North Dallas Tollway and only three turning lanes were added.

On nearby Beverly Drive, neighbors can't wait for Mockingbird to reopen. Since construction began, traffic has shifted to Beverly.

"It has not been particularly fun. There has been so much traffic," said Beverly Drive Resident Patti Keith.

Many who live on Beverly say the detours and additional traffic nearly took the life of Maureen Decherd in October, 2007. Decherd was struck as she crossed Beverly Drive.
