Suspected Mom Of Abandoned "Baby Bella" Arrested
Compiled from staff reports
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Dallas police have arrested a woman they say abandoned her baby at an apartment complex two weeks ago.
The child was found at the Cambridge Apartments on Northwest Highway. Caseworkers are calling her 'Baby Bella.'
'Bella' was found in a hallway at the apartment complex last Wednesday. She is in good health and in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Police arrested Angela Castro at a hearing this morning. A Dallas Police Department spokeswoman said they are confident that Castro is the mother, although they do not yet have results of the DNA test that will positively determine parentage.
Castro is charged with endangering a child, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
A custody hearing is scheduled for July 7. The father will undergo a psychological test before the hearing, which the judge will use to determine if he is fit to take custody.
According to court documents, the baby's father, William Bynum, didn't know Castro was pregnant. We spoke with him today. "I would have had nine months to prepare and we wouldn't have had to go through this," he said. "She'd be home safe and sound."
Bynum also said he is fighting for custody of his baby. Bynum said he hopes the baby "knows that she's loved and daddy's here for her, and our family's here for her and she's going to have a good home"
Police say if castro had brought baby bella to a fire station or hospital, she would not have faced any charges. But as it stands, she could be headed to prison for 20 years.
