Murphy Church Building Moving Across Town

MURPHY (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― One of the oldest buildings in Murphy is being taken apart today.

The First Baptist Church of Murphy says its congregation is growing and wants to move the church to a location where they will have more room.

So crews are dismantling the building and transporting it across town.

The church building is 108 years old.  And from the treasured stained glass windows to the cross that used to be on top of the building, the congregation says they have faith it will be taken apart carefully.

94-year-old Inez Daniel is having a hard time with the change.  "It's sad to see It… all the pretty windows."

Her first memories of the church are from the days when it was nearly new.  In the early days, Inez's nieces and nephews were baptized in a nearby creek.

Years later her own daughter and other family members were baptized in the church.  It's a place where Inez and her husband gained memories and friends.  "It was heartwarming," she said.

While change is hard, the pastor says the ability to move the church is a prayer answered.

"We've close to doubled in size in the last year," said Don Cole.

The church will eventually build a new building on a 10-acre lot about a mile and a half away.  But they are also going to put the old church building on the new land.  "We just think it would be a travesty to bulldoze," Pastor Cole said.

This church was built 12 years after the city of Murphy was founded.

Members hope the new location will bring as many good memories as the one they're leaving.
