Texas Soldier Proposes As He Ships Out For Duty
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Three dozen troops with the Texas National
Guard are spending New Year's Day on airplanes.
They are flying out to serve our country.
David Reed is among them. "We came home the twenty-second and
twenty-third of December and stayed 11 days," he said, "and we're flying
out today."
Reed's unit is headed to Kabul,
Afghanistan. They left from Love Field
this morning. They'll stop over at Fort
Bragg, North Carolina, and then continue on their way overseas. They'll be gone for at least a year.
"We're going over there to fight
in another country," Reed said, "so other kids can have the same
freedoms that my son has."
This morning, Reed had a surprise for
the mother of his 3-month-old son.
"Sheila," he asked, "will
you marry me?" "You know it!" was the reply.
Reed's new fiancée, Sheila Hunt, says
now she has something more concrete to hang onto while Reed is gone. "It shows that he's coming back to me
and our son. I'm not going to be left
alone."
Specialist Reed has already asked for
leave in October so the couple can be married on October 12th. That's their son's first birthday.
