Neighbors Say They Fear Grandmother's Mean Streak

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A grandmother is behind bars accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Neighbors say it's not the first time she's displayed a mean streak, and they fear it won't be the last.

Neighbors say Betty Jane Wade has been harassing them for years. But they say this time the 70-year-old crossed the line.

"My biggest concern is for the kids because she has gotten to the point that she has become violent," said Selena Culton, one of Wade's neighbors.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon in the 2700 block of Vogt Street in Fort Worth.

Judith Urtiz said she was standing in the street with several other people, including her 15-year-old sister and her one-year-old niece.
Suddenly, she claims Wade came out of her house and started yelling.

"She's like, 'Ya'll need to move before I run ya'll over!'" Judith said.

The victims say Wade got in her red Mercury Sable and sped past them. "She took off and then she came real fast right back," said Judith.

Then they say she got out and kept screaming. "She was like, 'I told ya'll to get out of my property!'" said Judith.

The victims believed they were on public property, so they stayed. That's when police say Wade got back in her car drove straight at the crowd.

"She was taking her car and just ramming it into the kids," said Renetta, who witnessed the incident. "The older sister jumped up on the car and told her to stop because she had hit her sister."

"She hit my sister on the side of the leg," said Judith. "She came out with some scissors, trying to stab us."

Neighbors say the attack does not surprise them.

"She always attacks people. If it's not verbally, throwing stuff at the kids," said Culton.

They claim she also throws rocks at pets, speeds past children while they play and attacks cars on the street.

"She drives like she's on the freeway," said Renetta. "She'll beat on the cars or she'll throw objects at them, and she'll cuss the people out that's parked in front of her house and tell them to move their M.F. cars."

That's why neighbors say they're relieved she's behind bars.

"It's just gotten to the point that either she's gonna hurt someone or someone is gonna hurt her," said Culton.

Wade declined to comment on the incident.
