New City Annexes Neighborhood, Shocks Residents

Seema Mathur
WILLOW PARK, Texas (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Some North Texans say they've gotten a huge shock from their property tax bills.

People who live in a certain subdivision, say they did not know they were part of the City of Willow Park until they received this year's tax bill.

Some of the residents have lived in the neighborhood for more than two years and have never seen the "City of Willow Park" written on their bill.

They thought they were in an unincorporated area of Tarrant County. Their mailing addresses are in the City of Aledo, not Willow Park.

Close to 200 homes were annexed to be part of the City of Willow Park in 2003. The fact that city charges were not on their property tax bill was a mistake, according to the city attorney.

The mistake may cost some resident thousands in current and back taxes.

The city attorney says officials will look into working any possible concessions they can make for the mistake, but he added that residents are constitutionally responsible to pay city taxes.
